This scientific outreach paper summarizes the main techniques used for medical image acquisition, as well as the physical bases of the main phenomena used to obtain these images, such as X-rays, discovered by the German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen (1845-1923), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and radiopharmaceuticals used in Nuclear Medicine. Information on the software used in the medical image reconstruction process for Computed Axial Tomography (CAT or CT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is also presented. Similarly, the author aims to highlight the leading Cuban clinical-hospital institutions in the field of medical imaging research, as well as the role played by the biomedical engineer in the medical image acquisition process.
